Petr Šabach: První láska a jiné povídky [B1]

The publication is published in the Adapted Czech Prose series, which introduces students of Czech as a foreign language to the wealth of Czech traditions and cultures. It is intended for students on the level of B1 and above.

With this collection the Adapted Czech Prose edition focuses on contemporary Czech prose. At the present time Petr Šabach (1951–2017) is one of the most widely read Czech authors and his prose has formed the basis for several popular films, such as Šakalí léta and Pelíšky. The ten stories selected for this collection share his typical humorous narrative style and common themes such as family life, relationships and the different world views of men and women. The publication is also noteworthy for the original treatment of texts: each story contains graphically differentiated questions inserted in the text, so that readers can predict how the story will continue before reading the next part. These questions pull readers into the story, inspire them to reflect and converse about a given topic. It is also, however, possible to skip the questions and read the text as a whole. The volume is accompanied with pictures, which illustrate the plot and help readers understand the meaning of the stories.

The publication contains exercises to improve grammar, vocabulary and communicative skills for each text, a Czech-English-German-Russian dictionary and an answer key to exercises. The set also includes an audio CD with a complete recording of the book.
