Čeština expres START is a preparatory course for Czech as a foreign/second language, which can come before work with A1 or higher-level textbooks. All of its seven units focus on everyday situations from practical life. The course introduces students to objects which are all around them (their classroom or room, everyday objects) and it teaches them how to orient themselves in situations which they can encounter on a daily basis (shopping, directions).
Space is also dedicated to resolving crisis situations (calling a doctor, the police or fire department) and the basics for interactions with public offices, including how to fill out a form. Unlike classical textbooks, the publication works using elements of direct teaching methods, without explicit explanations of grammar rules.
The preparatory course can be helpful for the beginning Czech studies of non-Slavic students, for students studying directly in Czech without an intermediary language, for students with minimal knowledge of grammar terms and for students who are not comfortable with or do not know the Latin alphabet.
The publication also includes the following freely available supplementary materials: Teacher's manual with on-line activities, MP3 audio recordings and a Penmanship book for practicing the Latin alphabet (all available for free download here).
